Creating Strong Passwords!

Creating Strong Passwords!

The strength of your passwords are important for your protection on and offline.

The more secure your password the safer your online experience. Protect your personal and important data from getting into the wrong hands and protect your identity.

What not to use for your passwords: [easily be deciferred].

  • your name, phone number, address, date of birth, etc.
  • dictionary words
  • 123456

Strong passwords are made up of numbers, letters and characters.  It is suggested that whenever possible use 14 characters or more. Use the entire keyboard not just the letters and characters.

Your password does not have to be just numbers, letters and/or characters. If you have trouble remembering your password, make a sentence out of it.

Create a sentence to remember this password:  IwIhl@M$bi86

I wish I had looked at [@]  Microsoft $tock back in 1986.

Using the first letters of each word in this sentence to remember the above password. change at to @ and the s in stock to $.

Creating sentences is also a great way to create a strong and memorable password.

Example 1 Generate a sentence or two.
Are your programs up to date with the latest information?

Example 2 Remove the spaces
Areyourprogramsuptodatewtihthelatestinformation?

Example 3 Turn words into numbers, symbols or shorthand
Ryourprogramsup2datewiththelatestinformation2011?

Test your password with a password checker

Firefox Crashed!!!

The Day The Fox Left Me!

What to do in the event of a crash. (No in this case you do not call for an
ambulance). Software crashes require you to perform a bit of investigation
into why the problem occurred in the first place.

Investigative steps:
1. Scan for viruses, malware, spyware using your anti virus system.
Not to scare you but you can receive harmful bits of information from
surfing, from your inbox, etc. If anything is found make sure you remove
it.
2. Uninstall firefox and do a registry scan to make sure there a no
traces of the software left in the registry.
3. Shut down and reboot your computer using the start button on your
desktop not the start button on computer. Using the start button on your
desktop will properly save your information.

After your computer is back up and running go to firefox.com and download
the browser software. This is where I had a problem because I was getting the
following message after installing FF.

Platform version “5.0″ is not compatible with
minVerison>=5.0.1
maxVersion<=5.0.1

Here is the actual error message:

I contacted firefox support Live Chat.

After several minutes of determining how I installed firefox, the support member
suggested a clean install.

Rename the install folder or install in a different folder.
to find the install folder right click on the computer
icon and click on properties. click on programs, this lists the
programs installed on your computer. Find the Mozilla Firefox folder
and rename it Old Firefox. Renaming the folder will eliminate the
chance that it was a corrupt file.
Try to open FF in Safe Mode using these steps: Start Firefox
in Safe Mode by following the instructions at

http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode.

To open profile manager follow these steps: Start Profile Manager
by following the steps at https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles.

After performing the above steps and still getting the same error message the
support agent decided that maybe it might have been that I had downloaded
a corrupt file. He gave me another link to try insalling FF. https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/5.0/win32/en-US/Firefox
%20Setup%205.0.exe

After installing from the above link I was able to again start using firefox.

Your firefox browser profile contains several important
bits of information that allows you to upgrade without
loosing important bookmarks and history that you have
saved over time.

If you have opened you browser only to find items missing
you can locate them by looking at you FF profile.

One day I opened my FF browser to find that my bookmarks
were missing. These bookmarks were of the traffic exchanges
that I constantly surf, flash conference room url’s, and
other sites that frequently checked.

This is what I did to get my bookmarks back. Across the top
of the browser window you will see a navigation menu. File,
Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help. Click on the
Help button, then click on “Trouble Shooting Information“. When
the information window opens look for the Profile Directory
and click on “Open Containing Folder“, which will open up your
Firefox profile.

Close the firefox browser and open the FF profile and look for
anything ending in “.sqlite“. If you delete the .sqlite entries
and reopen you FF browser your bookmarks will be there as they
should be. If you are in the habit of having FF save your login
information, (not really a good idea, save your login info in a
secure place other than on your computer), do not delete
signons.sqlite“.

Your profile is a history of your Firefox usage.

You can find out more your FF profile here.
type “profile” in the search window you will find more information
about your FF profile. Go the list of problems and select “Lost
Bookmarks
“.

Here is another nagging problem that may occur as shown in this image.

Don’t wait until disaster strikes!

If you are getting error messages and crash reports you are about to loose important data you have on your PC.

Prevent the lose by taking some precautions before it happens. Here is what I do and it has saved me from lose of templates, website data, personal information, etc.

Step one:

Make a list what you are going to backup and get your CD’s or Flash Drives ready.

  1. Purchase blank CD’s – Hold 702MB of information [CD-R or CD-RW]
  2. Maybe invest in a flash drive – hold from 1 GB up to  32 GB of information

Step
Two:

Check for spyware and malware using such tools as

Step
Three:

Perform a complete system defrag. Click on Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter.

Depending on how many files you have defrag may take up to several hours.

Step Four:

Copy the data that you decided to backup to your CD’s or Flash Drive(s).

Accomplish this on regular basis you will save yourself a lot of hard work later should your PC crash.
